Dos and Don'ts for a perfect blowout.

Dos and Don'ts for a perfect blowout.

Are you blow-drying your hair correctly? Find out what you should and shouldn’t do to avoid damaging your hair unknowingly!

The way you dry your hair can either give you a salon-worthy blowout or damage your precious locks and cause frizz, breakage and even premature hair fall (every woman’s nightmare!)

But before you panic, here are some important dos and don’ts of blow-drying your hair to keep your mane in shape:

Don't move the hairdryer in an upwards motion, always blow downwards to keep the cuticles flat and smooth.

Don't apply heavy products before a blow-dry as it weighs your hair down, making it look flat and greasy.

Don't blow dry your hair straight after a shower when it’s sopping wet, as that’s when hair is at its weakest and most vulnerable state. Wait until hair is more than halfway dry before switching on the hairdryer, to avoid damaging the cuticles.

Don't keep your hairdryer at one spot, as this can burn the scalp and hair follicles. Instead, keep moving the dryer around.

Don't brush your hair while it’s wet, just dry your hair without brushing it first. As wet hair is extremely fragile and it can get damaged by the simple action of brushing. Even a little traction can trigger a lot of hair fall. It’s going to be much easier and safer to do it once the hair is dry.

Do divide your hair into four sections, securing with pins or clips and working each section at a time.

Do pick a good hairdryer. Ionic hair dryers are ideal, as they reduce frizz and dry hair faster without frying it. Look out for one with multi-heat and speed settings, or better yet, intelligent heat control. And never dry your hair with a flat iron!

Do apply a heat protectant and turn your hairdryer to the lowest setting available to minimize heat damage, use a heat protectant which also helps tame frizz!

Do use a lower heat setting. This is going to be as effective as the higher ones, without damaging your hair that much. By using less heat, you won’t need to trim your ends that often. Besides, high temperatures may cause the hair to fall, as it can affect the follicles.

Do condition your hair before you blowdry. After you shampoo your hair, you strip away its natural moisture. This is not good for the ends, as it may lead to breakage. This is why you have to use a good conditioner, especially if you blow-dry your hair. The conditioner is going to offer a little protection, so your hair won’t get damaged as quickly.

Following these tips is a must if you want your hair to look gorgeous and full of life. Dry it as you want, but take all cautionary measures to avoid harming it. Remember that lower temperatures work as efficiently as high ones, without all the added damage.

Happy Styling!
